“But there's a further, critical consideration here. For a design to be successful—and by that, I hope to imply great—there must be at least one detail within that design that is luminous. Much like the starling song being attractive and unusual to the human ear, when we hear the luminous detail of the baby crying amidst the clicks and whistles, we feel wonder.”

“If we think about the tree as a design, it’s something that makes oxygen, sequesters carbon, fixes nitrogen, distills water, provides a habitat for hundreds of species, accrues solar energy, makes complex sugars and food, creates micro-climates, self-replicates. So, what would it be like to design a building like a tree? What would it be like to design a city like a forest? So what would a building be like if it were photosynthetic? What if it took solar energy and converted it to productive and delightful use?”

“Design is the process of gradually applying constraints until an elegant solution remains.”
I found this quotation from Luke Wroblewski in a podcast from UIE Brain Sparks where Mr. Wroblewski is interviewed by Jared Spool. I’ve always though it was a great way to think about desgn, especially in the interest of progressive enhancement.
“Look, I’ve never had a dream in my life
Because a dream is what you wanna do, but still haven't pursued.
I knew what I wanted and did it till it was done,
So I’ve been the dream that I wanted to be since day one.”
